SKILLSAFE EU was recently featured in an interview published by BUILD UP, the European Commission’s portal for energy efficiency and building professionals. In the interview, Nishant Karve, Environment Research Engineer at Daikin Europe and Project Coordinator of SKILLSAFE EU, discusses why developing the right skills and safety competences is becoming increasingly important as Europe accelerates the deployment of heat pumps and transitions towards natural refrigerants such as R-290.

The interview explores the growing need for harmonised training approaches across Europe and highlights the role of the SKILLSAFE EU project in developing a common safety framework for professionals working with highly flammable refrigerants. It also provides insights into the European safety guidelines currently being developed by the project and the pilot training programme designed to validate them in real-life conditions.

Particular attention is given to the skills required throughout the entire heat pump lifecycle, from installation and commissioning to servicing, refrigerant recovery and end-of-life management, as well as to the new engineering and safety considerations associated with low-GWP refrigerants.

The key message is clear: achieving Europe’s heating decarbonisation goals will require not only innovative technologies, but also a workforce equipped with the right knowledge, practical competences and safety culture to deploy them effectively and safely.
